History
In the Domesday Book the manor of Bramhall is called Bramale, a name which derives from the Old English words ‘brom’, meaning broom, and ‘halh’, a nook or secret place, probably close to water.
The park used to be the parkland and woodland estate attached to Bramall Hall. Today the Hall is still one of Cheshire’s grandest black and white timber framed buildings dating back to the 14th century.
The Davenport family lived here for over 500 years but it was Charles Neville who re-modelled the park into the landscape you see today. A keen engineer, Neville created the park’s ponds in the 1890s by altering the course of the Lady Brook.
The lakes are no longer fished but they are still enjoyed by many of our visitors. As you walk around the park today you will see the results of its varied history with its open formal parkland and lush natural areas.
In its early days as the estate attached to the Hall, much of the surrounding area was open wooded parkland stocked with deer, cattle and horses. You can still see the evidence of this in the form of a sunken ditch along the edge of the grass facing the entrance to the Hall. This ditch, known as a ‘ha-ha’, was used to prevent the animals from approaching the house.
Community Involvement
The friends group was established in 1999 with the aim of improving the infrastructure and natural habitats of the park. Members of the group meet one Saturday each month to carry out practical conservation tasks within the gardens and parkland.
Trees, shrubs, flowers and bulbs have all been planted by the group in the gardens around the Hall. A new picnic area has been created and new play equipment installed in partnership with Stockport Council.
Members of the friends group and the local community with an interest in the park are involved in its continuing development through formal consultation, practical action and applications for funding.
New members are always welcome, if you would like to help the group with their activities please contact the Parks and Recreation Service who will put you in touch with the group.
