An Overview of Vintage Old School Skateboards
Since skateboarding was first introduced it has gone through several transformations, each one producing a better board each time. These boards are now collector items to be enjoyed by skateboarding enthusiasts all over the world. There are several types of vintage old school skateboards sought after by collectors and new boards re-issued for that retro look and hard to find vintage old school skateboard.
Vintage old school skateboards from the late 1950s to the early 1970s were shaped similar to a surfboard out of solid wood or plastic. On some occasions these boards were even made of metal. These skateboards were only about 6-7 inches wide. The wheels on these first skateboards were roller skating wheels attached to wooden boards and came with clay or metal wheels. These wheels were not very sturdy compared to today’s wheels and hard to control. While these decks are a little piece of skateboard history, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to ride an authentic one.
Skateboarding took a new turn in the 1970s with the invention of the urethane skateboard wheel, which is similar to the wheel used today. These vintage old school skateboards have trucks made specifically for skateboarding and were often 10 or more inches wide for more control. Banana boards made from polypropylene very popular during this time and were available in many colors. Other boards made from fiberglass and aluminum were also used but the most popular was maple plywood.
By the 1980s many skateboarders were the owners of many skateboard companies. Because of this, it enabled more creativity from individual companies creating new styles and shapes of boards. This included lots of new artwork on the boards, giving skaters more options to express individuality. Because of the wide variety of style these 1980s era boards are the most popular of all the decks. With a little checking around the avid skater can find some great deals on these. Always verify authenticity before buying these and know about the board being purchased to get the best deal possible.
A popular trend occurring today is buying re-issues of original vintage old school skateboards for cruising around town with some old school flair. These are great for the average skater that can’t afford originals but still love the look and feel. Re-issues are also a great way to show homage to many decks that are rare or hard to find. Finding re-issues and other boards are fairly easy and provide a wide variety of choices to choose from.
With today’s online world finding that perfect board is just one click away. There are so many choices to choose from of vintage old school skateboards from originals to re-issues, the hard part will be picking the one to buy. Take time looking for these boards, some of them are extremely rare and when they do appear for sale buy them if you love them and they are in good condition. Some collectors are willing to trade their vintage old school skateboards for a vintage board that you may already own.
